Nathan just texted me, begging that we become vegetarian because he was somewhere and they had those huge lobster tanks that scare the shit out of people (if they don't scare you, they should). So, kids, it looks like I'll be doing it for real this time, well, at least until I get rid of the eight Swai fillets and the cans of tuna I just bought. This is going to be rough because I really, really enjoy meat, but at this point, it's not worth buying it or even eating it. It's time to get healthy. Recipes, anyone?
I've been really bad at the whole being healthy thing. I bought an awesome pair of running shoes last week, but haven't actually used them to run. At first I told myself that I need to break them in first, but now that I have broken them in, I have come to the conclusion that I'm just scared to start running. It's such a stupid fear, but I've been fat my whole life and I've never had any good memories associated with running. I just need to get over it, lace these babies up, and stop being such a pussy.
And music. I don't know why I ever stop listening to him, but Ryan Adams has been my life this week. I don't know what it is that captivates me, but something about him has dug it's claws in my brain and washes endorphins over my entire body. His latest album, III/IV, is so reminiscent of his early work that it sends me back to high school, only I can relate finally relate to and understand the lyrics. He's just perfect. Here's some of his music:
The second one is my favorite RA song, and maybe my favorite song ever.

Try the Couch to 5K program. It's free, just a set of directions and it's meant to get a person who doesn't exercise at all able to run a 5K in about 9 weeks. Just google it!
ReplyDeleteVegetarianism and running aren't all they're cracked up to be. There are better alternatives to both that don't involve going to the extremes and still getting you healthy :) Oh an also, a guy on American Idol sang a Ryan Adams song last week and Jennifer Lopez openly admitted to not knowing who Ryan Adams is. I wanted to smack her, geesh.
ReplyDeleteOn of my favorite vegetarian meals is a pita with pesto spread on one side, tomatoes, and cheese layered on top (broiled in the oven until toasty). I call it a toasty.
ReplyDeleteAlso, corn chowder. You can look up a recipe for it on allrecipes.com, and just substitute water and vegetable bouillon for chicken stock.
There are tons of meat substitutes, too. I recommend almost anything by Quorn. We put their faux chicken pieces on pizza and make fajitas out of them (they are alarmingly chicken-like).
Mushrooms can also be a good meat substitute.
Let me know if you would like recipes/substitutions. Most recipes that have meat in them can be easily manipulated to be vegetarian.
Kelly- The guy who created that thing used to work in the same building that I do. It's crazy! I'm going to look into it!
ReplyDeleteKam-It's not only about getting healthy, but it's about incorporating it into my every day life. Vegetarianism is also a good choice for me economically, seeing as how I'm always poor. I want to do running because I want something I've always wanted to be able to do.
Katie- Please send me some recipes! I've heard of Quorn, but I haven't looked into where I can buy it. You guys are vegetarians, right?
